Montreal fashion week : Tavan & Mitto

As I mentioned on Monday, I went to a Montreal Fashion Week show by designers Tavan & Mitto. I have to say from all the shows I've been to (all in montreal) this one was the best, from the fabrics to the trend following-yet being unique, it was spot on. The only think I didn't like was the use of furr and how small the collection is.. but that's Montreal; all the collections are short. My favorite is the copper suit and there was a white plunge neckline dress with what seemes to be crystal beading - was amazing.

Went with my friend Jaya and Melanie, I loved the giant key hole closure at the back of Jaya's sweater and that her shirt was popping through :P

So, its a good thing I didn't buy the Mulberry bag for christmas.. because I changed my mind. When I saw this Givenchy bag at Holt's a couple months ago I knew it was perfect for me.. Its simple *Check* timeless *Check* has the option to be short strap and long *Check* and it is brown *Check*. So, I am doing the responsible thing and instead of buying new clothes I am saving for it. I think its better to put aside money for it to grow slowly then spend a lot of it right away? make sense? I don't know but I feel like it's more mature? or shows self control? Which, to me, are great qualities :)

Until today I was feeling no stress about my University applications.. Most of it is due to information I did not know until now and the fact that I am not a US citizen. The differences between the Canadian/Quebecois schooling system and the American one is really getting to me and I feel like, even though time-wise, it is so close, I feel like my dream to move to New York is getting less and less probable. I always say "positive attitude" but right now I see no bright side. Anyway, I will do whatever I can to make sure I get everything done for every school (which I thought I already did, thats the bad part)

Saturday before having dinner with Alex and I's parents, we rushed to the mall for some quick shopping. I bought this glittery ..I don't really know what to call it but it has some kimono traits. As I was doing a second run through of the Baie while sale-shopping, I saw a slight glitter popping out behind a row of shirts.. when I went to pick up the garment and observe its shape I noticed it had an asymmetrical panel at the front, the style I've been obsessing about for some time now. Stunned, I checked the size right away..8..shit.. 10..12..14..WTF WHY ARE THEY ALL BIG SIZES? I right away told myself its probably cause everyone my size bought it already, which actually happens to me a lot. Then, I decided to ask a sales lady if there were any in the back even though I knew it was a stupid question because, duh, its sale season, they put everything on the floor to be sold.. As I was approaching one, I saw, in the furthest corner possible, sandwiched between the collections rejects, the skirt! My heart starts racing, I grab a skirt, look at the size.. 0.. OMG THIS IS THE SMALL SECTION! 6...2..4..! VICTORY! I was so happy to find it I think I ran to the changing rooms.

This is my outfit from my first day back to school (Jan.10th) I had just bought this top at zara and needed to wear it right away, love it too much. Also, my good news I mentioned from the last post is that I was vote for to be a coordinator for my program's fashion show! A dream I've had since I heard that it existed. I'm so proud of myself and happy, its one of those moments you feel like you are really doing the right thing/this is what you're meant to do. So yay!

One of the key things I did when decorating/finding furniture was to buy vintage and customize things. For example, the frame for my mirror was 10 dollars, I cleaned and painted it and got it framed, thus creating a completely unique piece :)

So far I've bought a AlexFarga mother of pearl ring that looks almost exactly like the 10 dollar white ring that I always wear. I figured since I wear it so much I should buy one that will last longer. Also, a straw bag made from people here (like the clutch I bought here last year), the Ellie Saab perfume, a bikini by Quintsoul, a Kate Spade bag (sort of an impulse buy so please confirm to me that its a good choice!! And I got a clam/pearl crystal for my Swarovski collection.
All while wearing the dress I made.. didn't take more photos..sorry I know I promised to show you how it looks! Maybe I'll wear it again.

Aquatic life in an aquarium

Stupid me, I forgot my camera charger back home and my camera battery was halfway when I left home. So.. it died thus I wasn't able to take or upload photos last night or today.. These are some from the night from the last post and the day after. (my dad's beach art that alex helped with. On another note.. I'm not a fan of zoos and the idea of taking something wild and showcasing it for humans' entertainment. It's quite selfish and cruel to me.. but I have to admit it's wonderful to be able to see such life. There's something mesmerizing about animals.

As you may know, every year my family and I go to the Bahamas, where we have a condo. This year I brought Alexander, my boyfriend (as I did last year). One of my favorite things about Bahamas is "the dig" in Atlantis. They made this underground passage with beautiful aquariums and cool artifacts. It really never gets old.

I got one of my christmas gifts a little early this year because I know what it was and wanted to have it done before vacation. My lovely sister got my a consultation and hair cut/styling at a salon downtown. I really wanted to do something different with my hair, but keep it long.. Alas, there is not much one can do with long hair except style it. So I ended up getting a trim and she curved my bangs a little.. and taught me somme hair-curling tricks. I'm still really happy and excited to practice with the curling iron (I'm horrible when it comes to that stuff) Anyways, this is my hair after the salon, still a little too bouncy for my taste but when the curls calmed down I loved it :)

I heard the warnings, I wont deny that. But for some reason I did not bring my winter boots from my parents' house to my appartment to be sure I could walk safe/be warm in the snow. What I did have however, were my rain boots... which I love, don't get me wrong, but there is absolutely no grip on them.. and I slipped and fell :( Anyways, after gym Jaya and I went shopping! Its been a month since my Opa (german grandfather) passed away. Its hard to describe the way I feel but its as if time froze when it happened and I have no idea how I got to where I am now. I don't understand how the seasons can still change without him, how the sun still rises and sets. Whenever there's a silence all I here is him calling my name. I wish I could hold his hand in mine one last time. I know its important for me to keep going on with my life as usual but sometimes it gets hard and I just want to stay in bed all day.

On another note, if you remember this, this is the famous dress I burnt my hand over, I got it back from the teacher to do final fixings before the jury (people in my school who choose what goes into the final fashion show in may) so I thought I would show you guys my work. We had to design a dress as if it was a Olsen twins-gap collaboration. It had to follow the theme of grungy, but also have the olsen twins' clean cut aesthetic and be cheap enough for the gap. Hope you like it!

Vanilla, coconut cookies

This is the first time I make these, I didn't have chocolate chips for the recipe so I just adapted my moist chocolate chip cookie recipe to be a vanilla, coconut cookie :) I guarantee these are irresistable - very dangerous.

You will need: 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup reg. sugar (I just used all natural cane sugar)

And cream it with 2/3 cup of margarine (I use olive oil margarine because its vegan)

Keep mixing until its fluffy, I don't have a hand mixer so I used this, but you can use a hand mixer, less stress on your elbow ;)

Once this is one add 1/4 cup vanilla soy yogurt or silken tofu. I really love the yoso brand.

And 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, mix well.

On the side, in a medium bowl swift 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour with 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Next, add flour mix to sugar mix in 2 doses until well blended

Next add about 1 1/2 cups of shredded coconut. I just used the rest of my pack, which was almost 2 cups.

Mix until evenly spread.

Next, spoon mix onto line backing sheets (with parchment paper) (about 1-2 tablespoons)

Put them in the oven at 350 for about 13 minutes, or until brown on the edges.

Let cool on a rack for about 5 to 10 minutes

And then enjoy!! :)

When I bought this dress last week I simply thought I would dress it down with some cashmere sweaters for school/everyday wear. But when my Oma (german grandmother) offered my sister and I her two tickets to the Opera, I was happy to find it in my closet :). Quick and easy

Fried beans and spinach.
I love this recipe so much because it's incredibly simple yet so delicious, the dryness of the fried beans and the moistness of the spinach blends perfectly together.

Heat some coconut oil in a skillet at medium heat..

Then, use a can of mixed beans, or any of your favorite like kidney beans or chickpeas. It's nice to have a mix though.

And fry them until the water in the skillet is gone and the beans look almost browned.

During the cooking add sprinkles of salt and pepper for taste.

Now is the time for the spinach.. depending on how much you want, I put a hand full. Keep in mind it shrinks so it might look like a lot at first but it wont be in the end.

You may need to add some more oil to help the spinach cook. Try to make a space for them in the beans, or use a separate pan.

Add more salt and pepper for taste and when the spinach looks like this, its ready to eat!

The Chanel Skirt

Remember when I got back from Paris I showed you guys the blazer to the vintage Chanel suit I bought? Well, I finally got the garments back from the tailor and I wore the skirt for the first time today. I love it so much, it's comfortable, fits perfectly and looks elegant.

Nails, nails, nails

Alright, so for the longest time I've been trying to master this nail-style and have failed every time. I had seen a tutorial on a blog a while back but never got around to buying the paper stickers needed for it, until a couple days ago...

So what you need is, 2 different nail colors, a nail polish base and top coat, scisors, and these stickers for when you make holes in paper.

First step, Paint nail with base coat, let dry.... Next, paint nail (or part of nail) with first color, this will be the one at the bottom. (I'm using Chanel "Graphite") And let dry for about 15 minutes ( I didn't wait long enough so my nail polish came off with the sticker and I had to repaint it)

Third step, cut stickers in half (while still on paper) and stick them to the bottom of your nail, make sure you stick them properly so the other nail color doesn't slip through!

Next, paint second color over nail, go over the paper a bit to make sure you get every spot and the line is clean ( I know, I paint my nails messy-ly.. but I always clean them after!) {I'm using Chanel "Vendetta"} Let dry for about 20 mins. Again I got impatient and smudged some nails.. Don't take off the stickers until you've done your second quote (if you need to do one)

Once dry, take off stickers and see the beauty :) and finally, apply top quote.
Oh and don't forget to clean up your fingers if you're as messy as me!

I will have to show you guys my collection of Chanel nail polishes.. And it keeps growing :)

I've been focusing my time on working on and finishing projects and working on my four university applications.. and eating, sleeping and working out. Oh wow. I just wrote the longest message I have ever written on my blog (well besides the vegan one) and I was trying to backspace a mistake and I pressed it too many times and I just erased everything. Anyways, a short version of what I wrote is that I entered into a competition I've dreamed of winning for three years, even if I wasn't inspired by the theme or happy about my design or drawing, and I did not get chosen. Which is a horrible feeling, especially when I hear those who got chosen talk about it. But on the bright side I did not give my all to it.. I probably gave my worst. So I don't feel as bad.. But it still hurts. However, my day was not all bad. I presented my progression of another project to my teacher and he told me I was doing really well and he seemed really excited about my designs (will show you/tell you about it soon!) But this desperate will to stand out from the rest of the design students in my school is making me become more and more impatient.. I just have to keep telling myself that my day will come.. and hopefully I wont have to wait another three years for an opportunity..

Agave Dijon Dressing

This has to be my favorite salad dressing, it's so easy to make and it's a million times better than just olive and vinegar (and don't even get me started on store-bought dressings). I love eating it with a still-warm quinoa salad or a spinach salad, or a mix of the two :) it's sweet but still has that salad dressing taste to it. yummmm

¼ cup agave nectar - This is sort of like honey but less sweet and less "heavy" you can find it in the health section of grocery stores or in a health food store.
¼ cup Dijon mustard.
2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
¼ cup red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar (I use balsamic vinegar)
2 cloves garlic
½ teaspoon fine salt
½ teaspoon pepper

Wisk all ingredients in a small mixing bowl until well combined, taste to be sure it isn't too acidic, if it is add more agave nectar.

I usually hate taking "long" photos because I hate how it affects the layout on the blog but I was getting very annoyed that I can't make a nice angle with my tripod that I went against my perfectionist habits. Anyways, I inspired myself of those amazing glittery MiuMiu shoes to paint my nails today :) I'm not really a high heels girl but I have to say, if I were to put myself into immense pain to look a little taller, it would be with those.

I got caught in the rain thursday on my way home.. The result, ugly hair and face and just wanted to take off my wet clothes and shoes.. so the photos here don't do justice to my new LBD from zara. I love everything about this dress. It's a classic, has a sort of vintage feel to it BUT with a slight twist - the slit shoulders. That's pretty much my recipe to anything I design so when I saw this dress I wanted it! Second outfit was from Friday, I love the scalloped edge of this tank top!!

A vegan meal II

Spaghetti squash and sun dried tomato sausage pasta with tomato sauce.
Made this for Alexander for our anniversary dinner, I loved it because it was quick and easy but tasty and nutritious :)

Heat your oven to 400 degrees. Cut a spaghetti squash in half length wise and add a bit of water to a caserol dish. Put the squash facing downward and bake for about 45 mins. Until the squash's skin looks blistery and a knife goes through it easily.
Meanwhile (well after 25-30 mins of cooking the squash) Boil 3/4 of a medium sized sauce pan with water, sprinkle some salt and boil. Then add 2 cups of any type of pasta (I used "fusils").

When you have about 10-15 minutes of cooking time left, slice the vegan sausages into about 1/4 inch thick peices, cook the sausages in a skillet with coconut oil until each side is browned.
Slive half a baguette (I like using ones that are a day old for extra crunch) and spread olive oil margarine, olive oil or coconut oil on, put some minced garlic cloves (depends on how garlicy you like it!) and sprinkle a bit of parsley on top. Put it in the oven with the squash until the remainder cooking time or until the bread is golden. ALSO don't forget to heat up your sauce to put on it! I'll give you my recipe soon!

When the squash is done cooking, take it out and with a fork peal the insides making slivers resembling spaghetti. You can mix the spaghetti squash with the pasta right away, I layered the meal though. First I put the pasta, then the sausages, then the squash and topped it with the sauce :)
What am I getting from this? Protein, Carbohydrates (Don't even try eliminating this from your diet, you do need some, come on), fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A, Various minerals and more :)
